June 2019 Art Displays at the Santa Fe Public Library
Stop by and peruse our great art shows that will be on display during the month of June:
Main Library, Satin/Reichman Memorial Art Gallery: David Alan Carpenter, “Pareidolia or What Do You Make of This?” (Wax Encaustic). There will be an artist meet and greet on Sunday, June 2 from 2-4 p.m. in the 2nd floor gallery.
Main Library Display Cases: La Pinta Art and Poetry from the Penitentiary of New Mexico
Spanish slang for prison, this group exhibition features artistic and literary talent by men who are incarcerated at the Minimum Restrict Level II Facility at the Penitentiary of New Mexico.
Through unique traditional prison art techniques, inmate artworks and poems highlight the diverse cultures of New Mexico and the Southwest.
Expressions of sights and sounds that transcend confinement:
Many visual artists collect found materials to produce creative pieces that bring color and beauty to the bland and stark prison setting. One skillfully crafted piece titled Delicate sculpted from toilet paper and bread and painted with acrylic paints renders a realistic bouquet of flowers.
With mastery of language, a skill highly regarded in prison, the verbal artists bring aural calm and composure to the often noisy and chaotic prison space. One poem titled Hatch Chilies plays with words and rhyme to create a delightful ode to this New Mexico specialty.
Rounding out the exhibition are mixed media drawings by featured artist Albert Medina.
The inspired sights and sounds by these prison artists attest to the humanity that resides in La Pinta and will be on display at the Santa Fe Public Library from June 7th through July 31, 2019.
La Farge Branch Library: Children’s Summer Reading Program 2019, “A Universe of Stories”.
Southside Branch Library: Tina Natonabah, “These are the Days” (Collage/Acrylic).
