Santa Fe Public library is pleased to present a new book arts exhibition, Lending Library of the Invisible by Maternal Mitochondria at Southside Branch Library for the month of May, 2022.
Maternal Mitochondria is the intergenerational art duo of Miriam Sagan and Isabel Winson-Sagan. Lending Library of the Invisible features collaborative books the mother-daughter team created during the pandemic. Inspiration for the show comes from more than a dozen years of the duo working with text and image, often sculpturally. The duo finds books and libraries inspirational. “Our love of libraries makes the setting inspirational for us,” Sagan explains. Daughter Isabel grew up at the Main branch of the Santa Fe Public Library where her dad worked. Regarding the exhibition, Sagan notes, “We want to add to the library-goers’ experiences, and expand the concept of what a book can be.”
Miriam Sagan and Isabel Winson-Sagan will be in-residence during library hours for conversation and assistance with the group’s interactive art piece, “What Am I Hiding, What Do I Hope For?” on 5/17 and 5/24 from 11am – 1pm. The piece asks visitors to hang their answers on sculptural trees or put them in slot boxes.
The exhibition opening and an artists’ reception will take place on Friday, 5/6 from 4-6pm. Parting refreshments will be served. Please contact Southside Library for additional information.
