Winning his first Tony Award, as the best new play producer on Broadway for Torch Song Trilogy, was a theatrical triumph that changed Martin Markinson’s life forever.  It became clear to Marty that theatre, against all odds, always was meant to be his life’s work.

Marty will tell you how it all played out, when you meet him at Santa Fe Library for story-telling and signing of his new memoir, Come On Along & Listen to My Life In The Theater.

His rags to riches story began as a boy during the depression when Marty worked selling newspapers, boxing shoes, busing dishes and ushering at a movie theater.  Looking back on the ushering job, Marty realized he not only was seeing movies for free, but he also was immersing himself in the art of storytelling and becoming enamored with actors, singers and dancers.

Thus began his enduring love affair with the entertainment industry. For the last 30 years, Marty has lived in Santa Fe and commuted to New York as a producer-owner of the Helen Hayes Theater on Broadway, which he sold in 2015.

Marty’s memoir reveals some of his success secrets, including how he: gained the knack for good fortune, enjoyed Dining With The Stars on Broadway, chose Cary Grant as a mentor, owned and operated a theater effectively, produced/promoted successful plays, planned opening night parties, was seduced by evil: from Broadway Producer to Hollywood Filmmaker.

Join us at Santa Fe Public Library to meet Marty and his magnificent wife, Arlena, to hear tales of their extraordinary life in the theatre business.  He will have copies of his new memoir for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library.
